SUGGESTED WEBSITES FOR CHILDREN’S
WRITERS:
Children’s writers need a
community. You’ll find many on the web.
I recommend the following list groups:
http://groups.msn.com/TheChildrensBookWritersCafe/cafe.msnw
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/childrens-writers
Check out these great
websites:
Harold Underdown’s
Purple Crayon :
http://www.underdown.org/
Margot Finke’s site:
http://www.margotfinke.com/
Verla Kay's:
http://www.verlakay.com/
Jan Fields:
http://www.janfields.com/links.html
(All the above
offer articles and links
for children’s writers. Harold and
Margot also offer editing and critique
services)
If you're serious about
writing for children, I recommend that
you join your local chapter of
Society of Children’s Book Writers and
Illustrators (SCBWI):
http://www.scbwi.org/
The Institute of
Children’s
Literature has a great subscription
newsletter, with fantastic articles and
publisher market updates. Also,
their website has a treasure of online
articles, as well as an email newsgroup
to which you can subscribe.
http://www.institutechildrenslit.com
If you write for the
children’s MAGAZINE market, try
http://www.kidmagwriters.com/
Do you write in RHYME?
I use
www.rhymezone.com. Easier than a
rhyming dictionary. It also has synonyms
and definitions.
When you’re ready to
submit to publishers, buy the
Children’s Writers and Illustrators
Market book. An up-to-date
edition is imperative (I buy a new one
annually). You can get them at any
bookstore or on Amazon. In addition to
publishers’ addresses and genre, the
book includes many articles, interviews,
and help on writing good query letters.
Check back again—I will
add new sites and I find them!
